Sanctuary Horses at Beyond The Roses
Top Bunk, 1997 gelding, by Dixie Brass (Dixieland Band), out of Loves To Explode. Bunk competed in 90 races before being retireing on April 5, 2008 with a lifetime earnings of $554,284. Top Bunk broke his maiden at Woodbine Race Course and ran at Aqueduct, Saratoga, Belmont and numerous other tracks before landing at Hawthorne. He raced in Allowance and high claiming races and worked his way down the ladder to low claimers. Funds were raised to help obtain him into retirement when it was observed that he was being raced with a suspensory injury. Back when Top Bunk was competing, many drugs were still allowed to be used to help these horses compete. Top Bunk was no exception. He acted like a stallion for many months, going through withdrawals. It took him over six months to aclimate to being a horse. This activity generated what is now called the “Top Bunk List”. The Top Bunk List is a list of horses, that are still racing that have made more than $500,000 and are running in claiming aces for $5,000 or less. Most of these horses have raced in G1, G2, G3, Stakes and Handicap races at the beginning of their racing careers. When these horses end up in the lower claiming races, they tend to jump from owner to owner with the thoughts that money can be made. When this happens, there is no loyalty to the horse. There are many that have disappeared…never to be seen again.

Twister was listed on the Top Bunk List and ended his racing career on August 5, 2010 at Calder Race Course in Florida with a lifetime earnings of $944,699. Funds were raised to get Twisted Wit into retirement when is was observed that he was racing with a sore leg. When he arrived, he was evaluated by a veterinarian. Twister had white line disease in both front feet and abscesses in both front feet almost to his coffin bone. Twister was stall bound for almost two years before he could join the other horses and learn how to be a horse again.

Portfolio came to us after racing and was suppose to only stay a few days before going to her new home in California. Hours after arriving she developed a spot on her neck from a bad injection that developed into Clostridial Myositis: gas gangrene. She ran a very high fever from this and was on many drugs to save her. Shortly after recovering from this it was discovered that she was foundering from her high fever. After speaking to many vets it was determined that the only way to save her was to perform a Flexor Tenotomy on her left leg. Portfolio is now flourishing at BTRE but it has been advised that she can not be shipped to California for fear she will founder again.
